Steel Look Windows & Doors – Hertfordshire
The project – a change of feel
Sam’s Hertfordshire house was blessed with a spacious extended area at the back. Large doors opened onto the garden and a modern stone patio.
There wasn’t really anything ‘wrong’ with the existing glazing, it was installed when the extension was built well over 10 years ago, but Sam really wanted to change the whole look and feel of the space. “I’d been looking online for design inspiration and was really attracted to the industrial feel that’s created by steel glazing” – she said.
Sam’s first thought was to investigate modern steel framed windows and doors. But it didn’t take long for her to discover that the cost of steel glazing was prohibitive, and she also didn’t like the sound of the maintenance required to keep them looking good well into the future.
Sam has used Barnet Window Company before for various glazing projects in the rest of the house and was excited to discover the Aluco steel-look range of Aluminium windows and doors. A way of capturing the iconic look of steel, without the initial cost outlay and potential maintenance issues associated with that material.

“The doors and windows were installed in one day, the team were punctual and hardworking and left the area pretty much spotless inside and out. I’ve worked with Tommy and his team before so know that they do things the ‘right’ way – I certainly wasn’t disappointed with my decision to use them for this project.”

Full support from design to installation
Sam was very clear on the layout for her new doors and windows. Centralised double French doors with sidelights either side. She didn’t need to incorporate opening windows to the sidelights, as we were also replacing a window with openings to the side of the extension, so we were able to maintain the clean, classical lines of the traditional steel aesthetic.
Tommy, her expert advisor on the project was able to specify a design proposal, including accurate CAD drawings to help Sam visualise the finished result, and was also able to provide images of similar installations.
The colour proposed was a matt finish black, which complimented the brickwork colour well. The design was completed with horizontal astragal bars, art deco style handles, and last but not least a cat flap!
