How Robert & Gillian took steps to improve the windows and entrance door in their North London home
The aluminium windows in Robert & Gillian’s Victorian terraced house in North London had probably been installed in the 1990s. They were fitted into the timber frames of the original sash windows. Although they’d provided a degree of insulation over the years, the locking systems were basic, and the frames were starting to look very tired.
“The hinges and handles were really showing their age” said Robert, “The windows were draughty, and we really felt it was time for an update, both to improve the heat efficiency of the house, and also the security. We also wanted to upgrade our front door, which wasn’t in keeping with the age and feel of a Victorian property”
The couple’s priorities were clear – warmth, security, low maintenance – and when it came to the front door, something sympathetic to their period home. A visit from Tommy followed next. He proposed A+10 Energy Rated UPVC casement windows from the Ultimate range. The front door solution came with a traditional Victorian style composite entrance door from Solidor.
“We found the process very smooth. Tommy was really helpful, taking us through the design options we had to consider for the front door, and also explaining the practical approach to the replacement, including the lovely traditional timber surrounds that would be used inside around the windows – a really nice nod to an original feature”
The decorative timber work internally finishes off the windows beautifully. Victorian Ogee architraves and hardwood internal cills mean that the new windows blend effortlessly with other original features inside the house.
The installation took place very smoothly, with very little disruption. Robert & Gillian were delighted with their new door and windows.
