Restoring Period Character with Bygone Sash Windows
Restoring Period Character with Bygone Sash Windows

Overview
When Morgan decided it was time to replace the windows at his traditional period terraced home in North London, improving their appearance was an important part of the project.
The existing casement windows, with high-level opening sections, were out of keeping with the original character of the property. Morgan wanted to reinstate a more authentic appearance, while also choosing windows that would work better for his family day to day.
We replaced the existing windows with traditional sash windows from the Bygone Collection by Masterframe, carefully chosen to complement the age and style of the house.
“The new sash windows just look right for the house. They’ve made such a difference to the appearance from the outside and feel much more in keeping with the character of the property.”
— Morgan
The transformation to the front of the property is significant. The proportions and traditional styling of the sash windows sit much more naturally with the architecture of the house, restoring some of its original period character and greatly improving its kerb appeal.
For Morgan and his family, however, the improvement isn’t just about appearance. The new sash windows are also considerably more practical.
Unlike the previous casement openings, the sliding sash design provides much greater flexibility when it comes to ventilation. The limit stop facility is particularly useful, restricting the opening of the sash and giving the family greater peace of mind when leaving a window partially open. Masterframe’s recessed limit stops are specifically designed to restrict the opening to 100mm until overridden.

“Being able to leave the windows slightly open on the limit stops is a really useful feature. We can get some air into the front room without having to worry about the windows being left wide open, even if we’re elsewhere in the house.”
— Morgan
It’s a great example of how the right replacement windows can achieve much more than simply updating a property. By choosing a window style appropriate to the original architecture, Morgan has restored the character of his home while making it more practical for modern family life.
