Maximizing Energy Efficiency with Sash Window Secondary Glazing

Traditional sash windows are beautiful things. Practical to use, and often flooding a room with fresh air and light. However, if your home still has original timber sash windows you may well be familiar with the downsides of them in a contemporary context.

When you’re looking to be warm, snug, and secure in your home, as well as controlling your energy use and expenditure, it’s hard to say that period sash windows are ticking these boxes. Often draughty, with poorly insulating single glazing, they fall well short of what we seek nowadays.

A potential solution to maximizing Energy Efficiency with Sash Window Secondary Glazing could be full replacement with modern more efficient versions, but that might not be the best solution for you. If you’re in a listed building or conservation area, or a flat in a larger building there may be certain barriers restricting you going down the full replacement route.

What you might want to consider is secondary glazing. We use a ‘balanced’ system, this means that regardless of the size of the windows they will always be smooth and easy to operate.

Secondary glazing can be specced with low-E glass for increased thermal performance, acoustic laminated glass to block more sound and is also useful from a security point of view as a visual deterrent.

Studies have shown that installing secondary glazing to single glazed sash windows, specified with appropriate thermally efficient glazing, can achieve comparable levels of thermal efficiency as full replacement of the primary windows, without the disruption, or cost.
